My HP OfficeJet 3833 does not print in black even though the cartridge is almost full. I've had the printer for a few years now and at one time it worked fine. A year or so ago he stopped printing in black. In Settings. Printer, I went to the HP OfficeJet 3830 Series and then to Manage > Print > Presentation Preferences > Advanced Options. At this point, under Document Options I've selected grayscale and there, just black ink. I click OK.And nothing, it still doesn't print or photocopy in black.

Hi @ifffam ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP OfficeJet 3833 isn’t printing in black despite the cartridge being nearly full, there are a few potential causes and solutions to try:
Check Ink Levels and Cartridge Installation:
- Make sure the black ink cartridge is properly installed and securely in place.
- Even if the cartridge is full, the printer might not recognize it if it’s not seated correctly.
Perform a Print Head Cleaning:
- Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance or Tools (depending on your printer's menu).
- Look for an option to clean the print heads or perform a print head alignment. This can often resolve issues where ink isn’t being applied properly.
Check for Print Head Blockages:
- Sometimes, the print head can get clogged. You can manually clean the print head by gently wiping it with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with a little water or isopropyl alcohol.
- Ensure the printer is turned off and unplugged before you do this.
Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers:
- Outdated or corrupted drivers can sometimes cause printing issues. Visit the HP website to download and install the latest drivers for your printer model.
Try a Test Page:
- Print a test page from the printer's settings menu to see if the black ink prints. This can help determine if the issue is with the printer or with the software.
Check for Software Issues:
- If you’ve set it to print in grayscale, ensure that the settings aren’t overridden by any application-specific settings. Check the settings in the application you’re using to print and make sure it’s not set to print in color only.
Replace the Ink Cartridge:
- Even though the cartridge appears to be full, it’s possible that the cartridge is defective or has dried up. Try replacing it with a new black ink cartridge.
Reset the Printer:
- Sometimes a simple reset can fix issues. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source for about a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
