My HP OfficeJet Pro7740 will not use HP 952 XL ink cartridges, it says it is an older generation cartridge and will not work. The cartridges are the same as the ones I have been using, purchased at the same time as the previous cartridges which worked fine until they were empty.

It sounds frustrating to encounter issues with ink cartridges that should be compatible. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.

 

  • Confirm Cartridge Compatibility: Double-check the packaging and labels on the HP 952 XL cartridges to ensure they are indeed compatible with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer. Sometimes, incorrect cartridges can be mistakenly purchased.
  • Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure that each cartridge is properly installed into its respective slot. Sometimes, a loose connection or improper installation can cause the printer to not recognize the cartridges.
  • Clean Cartridge Contacts: Turn off your printer and carefully remove the cartridges. Wipe the contacts (the gold-colored electrical contacts on the cartridges) with a lint-free cloth to remove any dust or debris that may be interfering with the connection.
  • Restart Printer: After cleaning the contacts, reinstall the cartridges back into the printer and power it on. The printer might recognize the cartridges properly after a restart.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues with newer cartridges.

 

In some cases, even though cartridges are supposed to be compatible, there can be issues due to firmware updates or specific printer configurations. Following these steps should help you diagnose and potentially resolve the issue with your HP 952 XL cartridges not being recognized by your printer.
