My HP OfficeJet pro 6978 does not print black. I replaced the cartridge. And I’ve done all of the steps that I have seen written for this problem in this blog. Nothing  works.

Hi @J-R2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is not printing black even after replacing the cartridge and attempting various troubleshooting steps, you may want to try the following additional solutions.

Clean the printhead:

  • Go to the printer control panel and select "Setup."
  • Choose "Printer Maintenance" or a similar option.
  • Select "Clean Printhead" and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • After the process is complete, check if the issue is resolved.

Print a quality diagnostic report:

  • Print a diagnostic report from the printer's control panel. This report may provide information about the printhead and ink levels.
  • Analyze the report for any issues related to the black ink.

Manually clean the printhead:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the printer access door and locate the printhead.
  • Gently remove the printhead and use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to clean the printhead contacts.
  • Allow the printhead to dry completely before reinserting it into the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and check if the black ink is printing.

Update printer firmware:

  • Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Visit the HP Support website, enter your printer model, and download any available firmware updates.

Check ink levels:

  • Verify that the new black ink cartridge has sufficient ink. You can check ink levels from the printer software on your computer or through the printer's control panel.

Align the printhead:

  • If your printer has an option to align the printhead, use it to ensure proper alignment for optimal printing.

Check for clogs:

  • Sometimes, ink clogs can prevent proper printing. Follow your printer's manual for guidance on checking and clearing any clogs in the ink system.

Perform a power cycle:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 1-2 minutes.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on. Check if the black ink is printing after the restart.

If none of these solutions resolve the issue, it's possible that there may be a more complex problem with the printhead or the printer itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
