HP ENVY 6458e All-in-One Printer

My printer HP Envy 6458e stopped printing from the black ink cartridge. My HP Smart App is showing the cartridge is not out of ink.  At one point, I came across a note stating the ink they shipped last was not installed. However, it was installed.  I am not that tech-savvy, so I am struggling with what to do. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi @LAYLA2024,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Envy 6458e printer. It stops printing from the black ink cartridge despite the HP Smart App showing the cartridge is not out of ink, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve the issue. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you:

Check the Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure the black ink cartridge is properly installed. Remove the cartridge and reinstall it to make sure it is seated correctly.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove the black ink cartridge.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  • Allow the contacts to dry for a few minutes.
  • Reinstall the cartridge, close the access door, plug in the printer, and turn it on.

Run the Printhead Cleaning Utility:

  • Use the printer’s software to clean the printhead. This can usually be done from the printer's control panel or through the HP Smart App.
  • Follow the prompts to clean the printhead. This process may need to be repeated several times.

Perform a Printer Reset:

  • Turn on the printer if it is not already on.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer.

Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers:  Software and Drivers for HP ENVY 6458e All-in-One Printer

  • Make sure your printer drivers are up to date. Go to the HP website, download, and install the latest drivers for your printer model.
  • Sometimes, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers can also resolve the issue.

Check for Firmware Updates: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Firmware updates can be done through the HP Smart App or from the HP website.

Run a Diagnostic Report:

  • From the HP Smart App or the printer’s control panel, print a diagnostic report to check for any issues with the ink system.

Try a Different Black Ink Cartridge:

  • If you have a spare black ink cartridge, try installing it to see if the issue persists. The current cartridge might be defective even if the app shows it as not empty.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
