My printer has a virtually new set of colour cartridges, HP branded, and despite selecting colour printing it will only print in greyscale. In the printer settings there is no option to make sure that colour printing is on and i can't find a setting physically on the printer to make sure colour printing is enabled. Can anyone help me?

Hi @AlainaR6,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is encountering a common issue, even with new color cartridges installed. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue.
Check Printer Settings in Software
- Open the document or image you’re trying to print.
- Go to the Print dialog in your software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat).
- Select your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 as the printer.
- Click on Printer Properties or Preferences.
- Look for an option that says "Color" or "Color Options." Ensure it's set to Color instead of Black & White or Grayscale.
- Apply the settings and try printing again.
Check Ink Levels
- Even though you mentioned the cartridges are nearly new, it's worth confirming that the color cartridges have sufficient ink. Sometimes, the printer may default to grayscale if it detects low ink in one of the color cartridges.
- You can check ink levels by navigating to the HP Smart App or the printer's control panel (under Ink Levels or Printer Status).
Print a Test Page
- On the printer control panel, navigate to the Tools or Settings menu and select Print Quality Report or Print Test Page. This can help identify if there’s an issue with the color printing process itself.
Check Print Settings on Your Computer
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Right-click your printer and choose Printer Preferences.
- Ensure that in the Color tab, the settings are set to print in Color. If set to Grayscale, change it to Color.
Run the Printer Troubleshooter (Windows)
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your HP printer, click Manage, and then click Run the troubleshooter to automatically detect and fix any issues.
Perform a Printer Reset
- Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source for at least 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- This can help reset the printer and clear any temporary errors.
Firmware Update
- Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for updates in the HP Smart App or on the HP website.

Check for Printhead Issues
- Sometimes, a clog or issue with the printhead can cause the printer to default to grayscale. You may need to run a printhead cleaning cycle from the printer’s menu (under Tools or Maintenance).
Reinstall the Printer Driver
- If none of the above resolves the issue, uninstall and reinstall the printer driver. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click the printer, and select Remove Device. Then, reinstall the printer driver either from the HP website or via HP Smart.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
