I have the HP Deskjet 3634 printer for many years and have used the same cartridges time and time again. Because of my cartridges have ran out of ink, I have replaced both the black and color cartridges with brand new HP cartridge (63). The new black cartridge worked as expected, however, the color cartridge was not recognized by my printer. I have shut my printer down several times, unplugged several times, cleaned the contacts, checked for the latest drivers and firmware and still get the same message.

The only time I do not get this error message is when I reinsert the old color cartridge back into the printer. I believe the new color cartridge may be defective.

If anyone can please assist, do let me know.

Thank you!

@solisunda, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP DeskJet 3634 is not recognizing the new color cartridge, even though the black one is working fine. Since your old color cartridge is still detected, it suggests that the printer's cartridge slot is functional, and the issue might be related to the new color cartridge itself. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

Check Cartridge Authenticity

  • Make sure the new cartridge is an original HP 63 color cartridge and not a refilled or third-party one.
  • Look for the HP security label on the packaging and verify its authenticity on HP website.

Hard Reset the Printer

  • Remove both cartridges from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord while the printer is ON.
  • Wait for 5 minutes, then plug the power cord back in.
  • Turn the printer back on and reinstall the cartridges.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts Again

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the color cartridge and gently clean the gold-colored contacts using a lint-free cloth and a small amount of distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Let it dry completely before reinserting it.

Reset the Ink System

  • Insert the black cartridge first, then close the lid.
  • Wait for any messages on the printer screen, then insert the color cartridge.
  • If an error appears, try removing and reinserting the color cartridge a few times.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • If your printer's firmware is outdated, it may cause cartridge recognition issues. You can update it using HP Smart or HP Support Assistant.

Try a Different Cartridge

  • There is a chance that the new color cartridge is defective. If possible, try another new HP 63 color cartridge.

Disable HP Cartridge Protection (If Enabled)

  • If you've enabled Cartridge Protection, it may be preventing the new cartridge from working.
  • To disable it:
    1. Open your printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) by typing its IP address into a web browser.
    2. Go to SettingsPrinter Settings.
    3. Look for Cartridge Protection and disable it.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Max3Aj,

I've done a printer reset, checked for latest firmware, reinserted the both cartridges many times to verify the error on the color cartridge, etc. At this point, I ordered a brand new color cartridge from Amazon, and that one has worked amazingly. My findings lead me to believe that the initially new color cartridge is defective if the old depleted cartridge and the very brand new cartridge are automatically recognized without error.

In this case, what should I do with the bad color cartridge? Please let me know,

Thank you in advance.

@solisunda, Thank you for your response.
If none of these steps work, the new cartridge may be faulty, and you might need a replacement.
