@JLT17, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Your HP OfficeJet Pro 8130e is prompting you to install the setup cartridges, even though you've already used them and installed new ones.

HP printers require the original setup cartridges to complete the initial printer setup. If the setup process wasn’t fully completed, the printer will continue to request those cartridges, even if they’re empty.

Steps to Resolve:

Reinstall the Setup Cartridges

  • If you still have the original setup cartridges (even if empty), reinstall them.
  • Power cycle the printer (turn it off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on).
  • Let the printer complete the setup process. You may need to connect it to HP Smart and finish the activation.

Complete Setup via HP Smart App

  • Download the HP Smart app: HP Smart for Windows/macOS/Android/iOS
  • Sign in or create an HP account.
  • Add your printer and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

After Setup is Complete

  • Once the setup is finalized, remove the setup cartridges.
  • Install your new standard ink cartridges.
  • Try printing again.

The problem still isn’t fixed. I have put the empty original cartridges back in the printer and now get the message ‘The indicated cartridges are missing or damaged. HP recommends that you replace any missing cartridges as soon as possible.’
I have two more sets of ink but if I put them in it tells me to use the original ink. Changing ink in a printer should not be this difficult! I’m actually at the point where I want to know who I have to contact to return the printer and get a refund because this is absolutely ridiculous. You buy a printer, follow all the set up steps, use the supplied ink, the supplied ink runs out, you replace it and then the printer says it doesn’t recognise it and you need to use the ink supplied with the printer which you’ve already used. This just keeps going round in circles. I spent three hours on what’s app with a tech the other week and that still didn’t fix it. Why is a simple task of changing ink so difficult!!!! I need this fixed or the printer replaced asap
