New but "expired" 952XL cartridge not accepted by HP Officejet Pro 8710

Yup, that's EXACTLY the same message I received on my Officejet Pro 8710 when I replaced my black cartridge with a new but "expired" ink cartridge from a two-pack I had purchased at BJ's a few years ago (expiration date in 2020).  See comment thread above.

I have the same problem.  I purchased a two pack of black ink (952xl) at Costco.  It says the warranty expired in September of 2020.  I tried to put it in a week ago and got the same message that the ink cartridge was an older generation.  It hasn't even been two years since the WARRANTY expired.  Nowhere on the package does it have a date when the INK was supposed to expire.  If it had an ink expiration of 2020, I would not have purchased this package.  I feel ripped off by HP.  I would like a refund on my ink.

I also have the same issue with my Pro 8729 and a NEW 952XL cartridge bought from Staples last year. Where is the warning about "Expired Cartridges"  not being usable?

How does ink in a sealed cartridge go bad?

I'm out $50 because I didn't print enough?????

Please send me the solution or request for cartridge verification.

I also have the same problem with my Pro 8720.   I purchased what I thought was a high end printer for dependability and flexibility and now I am finding that because I stocked up on ink so I wouldn't run out, I have four that I can't use and more importantly couldn't use them when I needed them.  Nowhere have I found that cartridges expire and cannot be used after the warranty date.  I work from home and can't be without a printer. 

I am expecting a replacement or the secret handshake that will allow me to use these perfectly good cartridges.

Same issue here. I purchased a 2 pack of HP 952XL black cartridges for my HP Officejet Pro 8715 from Sam's and when I opened the package today and tried to use one, I got this same 'expired' message. I am now stuck with 2 brand new cartridges I can't use in my printer.  This is $83.98 plus tax of useless product.  NOWHERE on the outside of the package did is say the cartridge would not work after the warranty date and the warranty date is very small and only on the cartridge itself -- not the external packaging at all. Very frustrated and feeling disillusioned by HP and the ethics of the company.

I am having this same issue as well.  I placed a sealed HP 952XL into my printer and I'm getting the error code of old ink.  This was brand new sealed in the box.  Before I go out and waste another $120 on HP Ink I'll spend a little more and get a new printer by a different manufacturer.

This was just my black cartridge.  I also have still in the box unopned the yellow, cyan, and magenta.  I have looked on the box and they all say Malaysia May 2020.  Will these also need to be replaced as well?  I would like to know before I replaced them and they don't work.

I have the same problem.  I bought 5 - 952 XL  2-pack Black and 3 - 952 XL 3 pack color HP several years ago.  To my frustration none will now work in my printer.  That represents a lot of $.  I never read anywhere about "will not work on your printer.  Will work in an older model!  They always worked fine before.  HP must have used my wi-fi to reset what works and what doesn't.  I have 3 HP printers and have always used HP Ink without any issue.  Now this!  Really!!!

I tried to replace my cartriges that I had purchased in the past and when I inserted one of the new "expired" cartridges in the printer I got the message: "this cartridge is an older cartridge not compatible with your printer but may be compatible with older HP printers".  They are brand new! What do I do? I have all 3 colors 952XL cartridiges!!
