Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My computer recently automatically updated to Windows 10.  I can no longer find anywhere where I can switch my printer from color to grayscale or vice versa.  It only prints in B&W now.  I have downloaded the recommended printer driver (PCL 6), firmware, etc.  I have spent hours trying to figure out how to print in color!  There are no options in Printer Properties, Printer Preferences nor Properties.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is completely frustrating.  This was not an issue in Windows 7 for me.

Hello @raydunc

Try this

Go to devices and printers and right click under printer properties then go to device settings and go almost all the way down to device type an change to color and save the change then go to printer preferences and in the color tab make sure the option print in grayscale its no checked

Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

Never, ever would I have thought to look there.  It was set to AUTO DETECT.  Now I can find the option to print in grayscale, too. Thank you so much!

I also am unable to print color.  I followed your directions, but there is no "Device Type", etc., on my version of "Device Settings."

I've downloaded the latest software, so what's going on here?

I suggest you go to Settings then to Devices , printers and scaners, scrowl down until you see Devices and printers, in there you should see everything that is connected to your computer/laptop, right click on your printer and select printer preferences. You should be able to set it there

I tried this:

"Go to devices and printers and right click under printer properties then go to device settings and go almost all the way down to device type an change to color and save the change then go to printer preferences and in the color tab make sure the option print in grayscale its no checked "

I am the administrator of the user account on my PC, but I was not given an option to change the device type, it had "auto detect" selected, and would not let me select anything, not even the dropdown.

I was having the same issue of not being able to print color when using my PC (Windows 10). Under Printing Preferences > Paper/Quality, the Color settings/options for B/W or Colored was also not present. However, my printer model is HP DeskJet GT 5820. Hopefully the ff. steps work for whoever is having the same issue.

What I did was:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers

  2. Right click your printer and click "Set as default printer."

  3. When a window pops just click "Ok."
  4. Under Devices and Printers, right click your printer and the "Set as default printer" must now be automatically checked.
  5. Check the Printing Preferences  > Paper/Quality  tab again (Devices and Printer > right-click your printer > Printing Preferences > Paper/Quality tab) and the Color option for B/W and Colored printing should now be there.
