HP OfficeJet Pro 9018 All-in-One Printer

Hello, I have an HP 9018 printer that was working great prior to the last firmware update.  Now, I have a Non-HP Chip cartridge detected.  I have disabled cartridge protection through the web portal, reseated the cartridges, power cycled the printer, disconnected the power cord for 5 minutes and other trouble shooting tips from the useless HP Virtual agent.     The inability to print when HP can't detect the HP Chip seems similar to the class action lawsuit back in 2018....   Where can I get an older version of the HP Firmware?

Hi @pgrenner,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing an ink cartridge issue with your HP Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

Let's perform a power drain:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle

Update the printer firmware

  • Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product
  • Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

You may refill your cartridges or use remanufactured cartridges, but you may run into problems. HP will not guarantee the functionality of those ink cartridges.

There are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it's not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I have a similar problem with my 6978.  I am using a non-HP ink cartridge.  I  was using a non-HP ink cartridge, and when I replaced that with a new, non-HP cartridge today, I get an error I have never seen before, "non-HP chip detected".  I looked through the various posts, and one led to a post about three conditions and updating your firmware.  I am having a tough time finding it again, but it seemed to suggest that updating the firmware would resolve this.  My firmware was updated says it has a build date of 2022-11-15, and when I try and look for updates, it says I have the latest version.  This suggests my printer worked fine until someone decided to push the patch to eliminate non-HP ink cartridge use.  I replied specifically to this post because of the lawsuit comment, recall hearing about that too.

This has been an incredibly frustrating experience, and a massive waste of time.  The lack of phone support does not help.  I tried the power drain procedure connected to this post and it did not clear the error.  All the posts refer to firmware.  I am going to post this and then try the other software updates, but see my printer is officially offline or caught up in this error so doubtful it is going to let me do anything more with it.

If the answer is no, there is no way to resolve this besides buying HP ink, get it over and just say that.  I will be highly motivated to go look for a new printer.

Screw HP - I have wasted two days on this. On my way to Best Buy to buy different brand. One who does not screw their customers by changing terms of purchase without notice. Apple may be closed system - but they are upfront about it. The hell with you HP - BYE

Yeah, finally ran out of the HP ink cartridges and now stuck to getting HP product?...NO! Time for a new printer.
