HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer

My printer has been enrolled on Instant Ink since 2016 without problem. Today it has run out of black ink and I don't have a replacement. Checking the HP Smart , it says I have a cartridge error and will not receive cartridges until it is fixed. The suggested fixes don't work and I don't have an old black cartridge I can switch to to try to get a connection.

 

The only solution I can think of is to cancel both my Instant Ink accounts and buy cartridges online because HP seem to do the usual thing of making sure their AI blocks any useful human contact.

 

How do I get out of this?

The Virtual Agent did eventually allow me to order a new black cartridge, which should arrive today or tomorrow. I have no idea how I stumbled into it, though. I was about to give up.

 

Hopefully, the new cartridge will be correctly picked up by the Instant Ink system and everything will be fine from now on.
