HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I installed four new printer cartridges into my printer today.  I purchased the same models that I was already using.  The HP 952 color cartridges were accepted with no issues.  The HP 956XL black cartridge was reported back as an Older Generation Cartridge.

The HP 956XL cartridge box specifies the 8720 printer model right on the package.

I removed and reinstalled the cartridge.  I powered down the printer.  Yet the black cartridge will not register.

Printer screen says to contact HP Support for more information.  The virtual assistant was of no help.

After doing more research and digging deep in the forums, I found a person who mentioned that they were having the same issue on a cartridge dated 2020 on the box.  I had purchased my black cartridge at the start of the pandemic when my color cartridges needed to be replaced with my high school student schooling remotely.  I had not needed that black cartridge until now.  My cartridge was a 956XL also dated 2020.

I went out and purchased another black cartridge dated 2024.  This new cartridge was accepted by the OfficeJet 8720 without issue.

Perhaps the firmware update stopped the ability of the older cartridge to work.  I hate that I wasted money on a new HP cartridge but at least I didn't risk bricking my printer and I didn't need to buy a new printer.

Hi I have used two separate Black HP 952 cartridges, one is an XL and one is not, and neither will work. They are the same ones I have used. I cannot afford this type of error.... Ink is way expensive as is.... I am shocked this is even occurring.... Please respond...

Hello Rrickj5151.  Did you check the dates on those cartridges?  Should be on the back of the package if I recall correctly.
