I purchased a 2-pack HP 952XL black ink cartridge from Costco and the first one ran out so I replaced it with the second cartridge only to get an error message saying that an older generation cartridge does not work in my printer.  This is preposterous!  The first cartridge from the same pack was working just fine and it won't accept the second cartridge from the SAME pack!  I spent much time going through their online troubleshooting instructions only to get no resolution.  My printer is in perfect shape and is not ready to be replaced with another brand.  What is the solution for this other than having to purchase another very expensive ink cartridge pack?

Welcome to the HP User Community.

I don't know that there is a different solution.

The merchant might sell outdated cartridges ??

You might need to replace that cartridge after all...

I understand that HP updates their products. Nevertheless, this was a 2-pack ink cartridge set. Both cartridges are identical. Why did the first one work until the ink ran out and it did not accept the identical second cartridge. There is nothing mechanically or electrically different between either cartridge. The OS is making the decision not to accept the second cartridge. I feel I’ve been ripped off as cartridges are very expensive. I’ll be switching printer brands.

Sure, I get that.

I do not have an answer beyond providing the explanation we have for the message.

"Why?"  Packaging, as far as I know, is not relevant to individual cartridge expiration dates (printed on each cartridge).

Just more useless speculation.

I understand you will be moving on.

We do not judge what people decide to do.

If you would like to do so,

Save the cartridges for a little while - do this even if you get rid of the printer, I think.

I will forward your concerns for Review.
