HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

Hello, I tried to replace the ink cartridge on my Officejet Pro 7720 and I got a message that the cartridge is an older generation one and it cannot work with my printer.

I am not sure why I get this. This is a 953XL black ink cartridge and on the packaging it says that is is compatible with the 7720 printer.

I called HP support and they told me that because the cartridge warranty date has expired the printer is not accepting the cartridge to protect itself.

I believe this is bs. The one I removed had an expired warranty date as well and worked with no issue.

Here https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02534494 it says that I get this message because the cartridge was created prior to the release of my printer which is also bs since on the cartridge packaging it lists my printer.

So what am I supposed to do?

Dear Echo-Lake:  I have an 8710 that gives the same error when I installed the second cart of a HP 2-cart pack I bought 7 months ago.  The 8710 is 3 years old.  How can I go back to the original install s/w and stop updates?  I had a similar problem 3 years ago on an 8710 when the error msg was that the ink cart carrier was broke, which part cost more that the printer cost.  I was able to force Costco to give me a new 8710.  I do not appreciate the forced upgrades that HP imposes upon us by electronic destruction of perfectly good equipment.  [Personal Information Removed]

Hey Lewismohrtoo, were you able to find a fix for this?  I'm having the same issue you are on the same printer.  Total BS, HP should never be allowed to do this.  Printer ink so incredibly expensive, to make the second cartridge in a two pack useless because it's warranty expires before you can use it, is such BS.

After all, they called me from HP support. They told me the same bs they told me the first time. They never explained clearly why the printer does not accept my cartridge but it did work with the old one that had expired as well since 2020.

I'll try the firmware downgrade option I've read in other similar posts.

This is the last time I buy anything from HP.

Goodbye.
