Hi @rjblow01,
Welcome to the HP Support Community
I understand you are facing an issue with your Photosmart 5525 stuck in ink cartridge mode. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
Let's try these steps:
Step 1: Check the ink cartridges
- Check if you are using a compatible ink cartridge. Use this link to check the compatibility.
- Remove the ink cartridge and check if there are any plastic tapes on it and remove them
- Re-insert the ink cartridge and check for errors
- Try to print/copy
- If the issue persists, proceed to the next step
Step 2: Power Reset
- Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector.
- Turn the printer on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on. The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
- Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
- Reinsert the ink cartridges, and then close the ink cartridge access door.
- Check if you can print/copy
- If the issue persists, proceed to the next step.
Step 3: Clean the ink cartridges
Gather the following materials:
Dry foam rubber swabs, lint-free cloth, or any soft material that will not come apart or leave fibers (coffee filters work well)
Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might contain contaminants that can damage the cartridges)
Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Remove the ink cartridge
- Hold the cartridge by its sides
- Wipe the contacts with a dry swab or other lint-free material until no debris remains on them.
Dip a clean foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth into distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from it.
Clean only the copper-colored contacts, and then allow the cartridge to dry for approximately 10 minutes.
Ink nozzles (do not clean)
Copper-colored contacts
Lightly moisten another cotton swab with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from the swab.
Use the swab to clean the electrical contacts in the carriage, located inside the printer.
Clean the contacts in the carriage.
- Either let the cartridge sit for 10 minutes to allow the cleaned area to dry, or use a new swab to dry it.
- Re-insert the ink cartridges
- Close the cartridge access door.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Press the Power button to turn on the printer if it does not turn on automatically.
Try to print/copy
