HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 All-in-One Printer

Hi there,

In my Advanced Settings, the printer is saying Non-HP Ink Cartridge Installed for our Magenta Ink, which is working fine - or at least was, but on my new third party Black Ink (same company) - I am getting an error saying the cartridge has been blocked by the printer firmware

I have gone into the Cartridge Settings and noted that Cartridge Protection is turned off, but the error persists

How do I turn off this unwanted protection? or

How can I downgrade the firmware to previous version? The support website only lists the current version for my machine - which is unhelpful

Hi @Artholomew,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

HP's OfficeJet Pro 6970 printers often have dynamic security features designed to block third-party or refilled cartridges, which can be a hassle for users. If turning off Cartridge Protection hasn't helped, there are still steps you can take to try and get your third-party cartridge working.

Possible Solutions

Check for Firmware Updates Allowing Third-Party Ink: Sometimes HP releases firmware updates that re-enable third-party ink compatibility. Go to the HP support website and see if a new firmware version is available for download. Install any available updates, then try reloading your cartridges.

Disable Automatic Firmware Updates: Make sure automatic updates are turned off in your printer’s settings to prevent future firmware that could block third-party cartridges.

  • From your printer's control panel, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer > Printer Update Options and select Do Not Check.

Use HP Smart App (if applicable): Occasionally, using the HP Smart App can help refresh the cartridge status and bypass some firmware-related issues. Try opening the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device, go to Printer Settings, and try reloading the cartridges.

Try a Hard Reset:

  • Power off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for at least one minute.
  • Plug the printer back in and power it on. This can sometimes help reset error messages.

Firmware Downgrade (Advanced): Although HP's website may only provide the latest firmware, you might find a previous firmware version on reputable third-party websites or forums that focus on printer support. To install older firmware:

  • Download the older firmware version and connect your printer to your computer via USB.
  • Open the downloaded file and follow the installation steps.

Be cautious with this step, as HP does not officially support firmware downgrades.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
