Hi,

I’m having an issue with the print quality with my HP MFP 178nw printer. I have appended a picture of my print. What could be wrong? Is it time to change the imaging drum? My ink cartridges have not been depleted. Many thanks!

Hi @Herkdriver63

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the image—it’s clear something’s interfering with the smooth transfer of toner. I’m really sorry this is happening, especially when you’re expecting sharp, professional prints.

Let’s get this sorted with a few targeted checks and adjustments.

Step-by-step troubleshooting for HP Color Laser MFP 178nw

Inspect the toner cartridges

  • Remove each cartridge and gently rock it side to side to redistribute toner evenly.
  • Check for any visible damage, leakage, or toner buildup on the cartridge surface.
  • Reinstall securely and ensure the cartridges are seated properly.

Check the imaging drum

  • This model uses a combined toner and drum unit. If the drum surface is scratched or contaminated, it can cause banding or smudges.
  • Avoid touching the green drum surface directly. If you see marks or toner buildup, consider replacing the cartridge.

Run the cleaning cycle

  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup > Maintenance > Cleaning Page.
  • This process helps remove excess toner and debris from the paper path.

Print a diagnostics page

  • Go to Setup > Reports > Print Quality Report.
  • Review the patterns and colors—this can help pinpoint which color or component is misbehaving.

Check paper type and settings

  • Ensure the paper loaded matches the type selected in the print driver (e.g., plain, glossy).
  • Mismatched settings can lead to poor toner adhesion and streaks.

Update firmware and drivers

These steps should help restore the vivid, clean output you expect. If the issue persists after cleaning and checking the cartridges, it may be time to consider replacing the affected toner unit or drum.

You’ve done well to catch this early—print quality issues can be subtle but frustrating, and it’s great that you’re tackling it head-on.
