I purchased a HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus second hand and I’m running into an issue. When I first plugged it in everything seemed fine but when I tried to print a test page when I got it home, I get the “Printer Failure - There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP.” error. I have tinkered with it and it seemed to be fine with the color cartridges but as soon as I put in the black cartridge, the error pops up. I have done all of the troubleshooting including resetting it from the main screen as well as unplugging it from the base then outlet, waiting 1 minute then plugging everything back up. I’ve also took the cartridges out and cleaned the base to make sure all of the contact points were clean of dust, ink, etc. All of the cartridges are low (haven’t replaced any yet) but I noticed when I go to the web view of the printer, there is a yellow caution triangle over the black ink. Does this mean if I replace the black ink with a new cartridge everything should return to normal? Again when I first plugged it in before buying and even when I got it home, everything was fine but as soon as I tried to print a test page, that’s when the error came up and will not go away unless I take the black cartridge out, but then I still can’t print unless I put it back (but then the error comes up as soon as I do so I still can’t print). Help!

Hi @jmlions05,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you are experiencing a black ink issue with your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus printer, there could be several reasons why this is happening. Here are a few things you can try to resolve the issue.
- Check the ink level: Make sure the black ink cartridge is not empty or low on ink. You can check the ink level through the printer software or on the printer's control panel.
- Clean the printhead: If the ink cartridge is not empty or low on ink, it is possible that the printhead is clogged or dirty. You can try cleaning the printhead through the printer software or on the printer's control panel.
- Perform a printer reset: Sometimes a simple reset of the printer can resolve issues with the black ink. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for a few minutes. Then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Replace the ink cartridge: If the ink level is low or the printhead is clean, it may be time to replace the black ink cartridge. Make sure to use a genuine HP ink cartridge for best results.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
