You will need to Contact HP to request a "Regionalization Reset". There should not be any charge for this, it is covered as part of the cartridge warranty. You will need to have access to your computer and printer while on the line with HP. You will also need to have a set of cartridges for the new region, once the reset is complete cartridges from the original region will no longer work.  HP's web page on the subject is here.

I have also seen folks reporting good success getting the Regionalization Reset performed by contacting HP Support on the HP Support Facebook page here.

@VIOW, Welcome to HP Support Community!

We need to perform a regional reset on the printer to resolve this issue.

The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

it turned to be that my printer is too old and they don't have the region reset code anymore. Support advised me to buy a new one.... changing a perfectly working  printer to a new one with their ink mensuel subscription... Lame.

I will buy French cartridges and send it to Canada.

Bob just wanted to thank you for posting this information. Like so many others had an HP Officejet 8600 that happened to have

one Z20 cartridge in it when HP regionalized their printers.  All the other cartridges were older and non regional. Have no idea how the Z20 got mixed in with the the other cartridges but it did.  Unfortunately that cartridge was in the printer whenever they  regionalized  their printers. I didn't discover it until  2 weeks ago when the Cyan ran out and a new Z10 wouldn't work. Thanks to your information and after literally hours on hold with  probably 10 phone calls finally got to someone in level 2 support who actually called me back and reset my printer.  She was one of the few who knew what to do and actually believed me when I told her what needed to be done.  However without your insight i would've had no idea what to ask.  Still can't believe that any company would change what works in their products  so many years after production without any notification. Thank you again

@MikeinMN65 - glad your issue was resolved.  The Officejet Pro 8600 series was a special case, it was originally shipped as universal but later (after mostly all 8600 printers were out of warranty) regionalized cartridges were introduced. 😠  The printer actually regionalized itself shortly after the -Z20 cartridge was installed, it would regionalize to the first non-universal cartridge installed and used to print.  In my case I only replace the cartridges in my 8600+ about once a year, it would take that long for the issue to be discovered as it will only show up when the next (in your case -Z10) cartridge is installed.

@VIOW  - I have sent you a private message asking for some details.  I am not an HP employee, I have not asked for any personal information.  I believe your printer can have the region reset.

Thanks again Bob, that explains what happened. Until this incident I had paid little attention to HP cartridges outside of the model number, color, and to make sure they were only genuine HP.  Not that it matters anymore but the big mystery is how I wound up  up with only one  Z20 cartridge. Have only purchased ink in the US either through Amazon or at an office supply store and always bought the 3 pack 951XLs because they're more cost effective. From now on will always make sure that Z10 is printed on the box!

I would suspect Amazon, I have seen several cases of "wrong" region cartridges, especially in the early days of the 950/951 regionalization, from Amazon.  HP introduced regionalized cartridges (Z10, Z20, Z30 and Z40) for the previously universal 950/951 cartridges in about January 2017.  Especially in the first few months of the -Z cartridges there was not much information available, it was relatively easy to get incorrect cartridges.

Understand, that helps solve the cartridge mystery. Thanks!
