Date of post: 12.08.2021. I use only HP genuine printer cartridges. My 950 black cartridge was nearly depleted. I had a spare genuine 950XL cartridge sealed in the box ready to be used as a replacement. The replacement box noted cartridge origin in Malaysia with warranty until Jan 2022. Placement of the 950XL cartridge generated a printer error for which only a hard reset would work -- turn off printer, disconnect power cords, reconnect power cords, turn on printer. This sequence failed 3 times. Switching out new 950XL cartridge for the old spent 950 cartridge (with hope to print only in color) generated printer error that device could not print with empty black cartridge. Reinserting replacement 950XL cartridge generated message that genuine cartridge was in place but is was used. The printer cycled through start up, but ultimately generated the same error stating the printer would not print without a hard power cycle. I am dead in the water. The replacement 950 XL cartridge was not used and was under warranty. I have ordered another 950 black cartridge, but wonder if this device is beyond hope. Suggestions? Comments?

Hi @PJReddy,

I'd like to help!

I understand you are receiving a cartridge error with the 950xl cartridge.

Try the below suggestions-

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

  1. If your printer has a rechargeable battery, remove it.

  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  4. Wait 60 seconds.

  5. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

    NOTE:

HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

  6. Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Clean the ink cartridge electrical contacts

Remove any debris or buildup from the contacts on the cartridges.

  1. Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.

  2. Push in on the cartridge indicated in the error message to release it from the carriage.

    Removing the ink cartridge

  3. Wipe the copper-colored contact on the cartridge with a lint-free cloth.

Cleaning the contact on the ink cartridge

  4. Slide the cartridge into its color-coded slot until it clicks into place.

  5. Repeat these steps for any other cartridges indicated in the error message.

  6. Close the door or lid to the cartridge access area.

If the issue persists, I'd suggest you contact HP in your region regarding the replacement options for your cartridge.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
