I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 6230. I cannot get the black ink to work. I've tried all the suggested  standard solutions - cleaning the heads, soaking the ink cartridge, etc. Still no black ink. Someone suggested I should try realigning the print heads and gave me directions on how to do that by using the printer control panel.  I don't see a printer control panel - am I looking right at it and just don't know what it should look like? I see buttons that could be a control panel, but no idea how to access the correct buttons to realign the print heads.  Does this printer have a control panel? I'm at my wit's end and just about to throw this in the trash and buy something else. I really need for my color printer to work! Any help is appreciated.

Hi @Dorrie57

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern. Let me clarify this for you. The HP OfficeJet Pro 6230 does not have a traditional control panel with a display screen and navigation menus. It only has a few physical buttons (Power, Cancel, Resume, Wireless, etc.), but those are not designed for tasks like printhead alignment.

For this model, all maintenance functions—including aligning the printheads—are performed through the HP App (previously called HP Smart) or directly from the printer driver on your computer. That’s why you don’t see a control panel option for alignment.

Here are the recommended steps to align the printheads for your printer:

  1. Open the HP App on your computer or mobile device.
  2. Select your printer (HP OfficeJet Pro 6230).
  3. Go to Printer Settings.
  4. Choose Maintenance or Tools.
  5. Select Align Printheads and follow the on‑screen instructions.

If you prefer using the printer software on your computer:

  • On Windows, open Devices and Printers, right‑click your HP OfficeJet Pro 6230, select Printing Preferences, then look for the Maintenance or Services tab.
  • On macOS, open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, open Options & Supplies, and check the Utility section for alignment.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi Hawks_Eye:

Thanks for replying to my post. I was quite confident that my printer didn't have a control panel, so was a bit confused why I was told to do that. But I don't think the person that provided that advice knew what printer I had.

Anyway - I tried to go through the System Preferences on my Mac. Accessed the Options and Supplies section, but don't see a Utility section.  So I decided to use the HP App instead. I had two apps already downloaded - one is HP Utility. When I accessed that I found something that said "Align" so I tried that. I don't know what it was supposed to do, but it printed out a document which was all in blue.

The second app just said HP. It takes me to a page that gives all sorts of info on my printer such as ink levels, diagnostics, and printer settings. I went into advanced settings which has a tool bar at the top with Home, Web Services, Network, Tools, and Settings. The Home page has several boxes - one labeled Print Quality Toolbox. Clicking on that brings up a page where you can align printer - but I didn't see anything about aligning the printheads. So I'm lost.

So I then decided to see if there was another HP app I should download. When I went into the App Store to see what was available, a whole page came up with about 6 or 7 different HP apps. Didn't know what to do next, so just got out of the app store.

Can you provide some guidance as to what I should do next? I'm seriously thinking that just getting a new printer would be easier than going through this headache. LOL.

Thanks for your help.

Dorrie

Hi @Dorrie57,

Thanks for your response and thank you for sharing all those details. I can see how this has been a bit of a maze to navigate! Let me help simplify things for you.

From what you described, your printer doesn’t have a physical control panel, so using the software tools is the right approach.

 Here’s what I recommend:

HP Utility: This app is mainly for basic maintenance tasks like alignment and cleaning. The “Align” option you tried is meant to calibrate the printheads so colors and lines print correctly. If the page came out all blue, that suggests the printer may be having trouble with one or more cartridges.

HP Smart: The second app you mentioned is HP Smart / HP App . This is the main app we recommend for Mac users. It gives you access to ink levels, diagnostics, and the Print Quality.

Toolbox. That’s where you’ll find options like cleaning cartridges and aligning printheads.

Printhead alignment: Even if you don’t see “Align printheads” specifically, the alignment option in Print Quality Toolbox is the right one to use. If print quality doesn’t improve after alignment, try running a “Clean Printheads” or “Clean Cartridges” option if available.

App confusion: You don’t need all those HP apps from the App Store just HP Smart / Hp App (Latest) is enough. HP Utility is older and sometimes limited, so I’d suggest focusing on HP App moving forward.

If you’ve already tried alignment and cleaning but the issue persists (like pages printing only in blue), it could mean one of your ink cartridges isn’t working properly. In that case, replacing the affected cartridge should resolve the problem.

I completely understand your thought about just getting a new printer but before you do, let’s try these steps in HP Smart/ HP App . If the cartridges are fine and the cleaning/alignment works, your printer should be back to normal.

I hope this helps.

Hi Deep_World:

Thanks for your reply, but unfortunately, my printer isn't feeling any better. I'll list the steps I performed and the result so maybe you or someone else on the discussion can provide more suggestions.

1. I went ahead and replaced the cyan, magenta, and yellow ink cartridges since they were getting low on ink. The black cartridge shows it is mostly full, so I didn't replace that one. It should be mostly full since it doesn't seem to be working anyway.

2. I accessed the HP App, found the toolbox with the align printheads  and clear printheads options.  I proceeded to align the printheads.  The printout I got was various lines and slashes, all in a very pretty blue color.

3. Next, I proceeded to clean the printheads. The printout showed four squares towards the bottom third of the paper - blue, pink, orange, and green. I also did a second cleaning, as well as a third cleaning. Each printout after these cleanings showed the same blue, pink, orange, and green squares.

4. As a test, I then went into a document and tried to print it. The page that printed was blank, so that means the black ink is still not working.

I also noticed when I opened the cover to replace the three ink cartridges, there was a small pool of blank ink on the floor of the printer - on the right hand side underneath where the black cartridge would normally sit when the cover is closed. I don't think that is normal, and may be why my black ink doesn't print.

Any further suggestions? Is this a terminal case? Still thinking that getting a new printer may be the only thing left to do. Crap! Any feedback definitely welcome.

Thanks!  Dorrie
