@Etherizer, You're very welcome. I'm glad to hear it's printing again and that color output is at least usable now!

You're absolutely right: after replacing cartridges or running cleaning cycles, it can take a few pages of regular use for the ink to flow optimally and for colors to stabilize. Here are a couple of optional tips to help improve print quality further:

Optional: Align the Printhead

This ensures the ink is being placed precisely on the page.

  • On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Tools > Align Printer.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

Use High-Quality Paper

If you're printing photos or color-heavy documents, using HP-branded or high-quality inkjet paper can make a noticeable difference in color vibrancy and sharpness.

Let the Printer Rest

If you've run multiple cleaning cycles, it's a good idea to give the printer a few hours to rest. This prevents overheating and allows ink to settle properly.

@Blantyre, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP Officejet 4630 is not printing after canceling your Instant Ink subscription, even after replacing the cartridges with standard HP ones. Let’s walk through a few steps to get your printer working again.

Verify Cartridge Type

Ensure the cartridges you installed are standard HP 61 or HP 61XL cartridges, not Instant Ink cartridges. Instant Ink cartridges stop working once the subscription is canceled.

Reset the Printer

A simple reset can often resolve cartridge recognition issues.

  1. Turn the printer on.
  2. With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the back.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait for 60 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall and then into the printer.
  6. Turn the printer back on.

Clean Cartridge Contacts

Sometimes, ink or debris on the cartridge contacts can cause issues.

  1. Remove the cartridges.
  2. Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  3. Let them dry for a few minutes.
  4. Reinstall the cartridges and close the access door.

Run a Print Test

Try printing a test page:

  • On the printer control panel, press the Setup icon (wrench or gear).
  • Navigate to Tools > Print a Test Page.

Update Printer Firmware (Optional but Recommended)

Outdated firmware can sometimes cause cartridge recognition issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for your assistance. Printing in color now. Colors are still a bit "muddy" after 3x running the printhead cleaning tool, but liveable. I think things will improve with use.
