HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a

I replaced the black cartridge and rec'd an error message that there was a problem with the printer or ink system.  I have followed the instructions ie: unplug, turn on but still receive error message.

Hi @MiddletonRaymon

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for laying out what you’ve already tried—it’s frustrating when a simple cartridge replacement leads to a full system error.

Let’s walk through a few deeper steps that often resolve this issue on the HP Officejet Pro 8600:

Step 1: Inspect the Cartridge and Printhead Contacts

Even with genuine cartridges, poor contact can trigger ink system errors:

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the black cartridge and inspect the copper-colored chip for scratches or residue.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean:
    • The cartridge contacts.
    • The corresponding contacts inside the printhead.
  • Let everything dry for 10 minutes before reinstalling.

Step 2: Reseat the Printhead

This model allows reseating the printhead, which can reset internal sensors:

  1. Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop.
  2. Remove all cartridges.
  3. Lift the latch on the carriage and gently remove the printhead.
  4. Reinsert the printhead, lower the latch, and reinstall cartridges one by one.
  5. Close the door and power on the printer.

HP recommends reseating the printhead up to three times if the error persists. You can find detailed steps in the printhead reseating guide.

Step 3: Update Firmware

Outdated firmware can misinterpret cartridge data:

Step 4: Reset the Ink System

This can clear residual error states:

  1. Remove all cartridges.
  2. Power off and unplug the printer for 10 minutes.
  3. Power it back on without any cartridges.
  4. Wait for a “Missing Cartridges” message.
  5. Reinsert cartridges one at a time, starting with black.

Step 5: Test with a Different Cartridge

If available, try a second black cartridge—even if partially used. Sometimes a faulty chip on a new cartridge can trigger errors despite being genuine.

Let me know how far you get with these steps. If the error persists, we can explore printhead replacement options or deeper diagnostics. I’ll stay with you until it’s resolved.
