I have an HP Envy 7640.  Both ink cartridges are half full according to the indicator.  It is acting like it is printing but I am getting blank sheets.   No black.  I have turned the printer off and back on.  Removed and inserted the cartridges.  When I do this it is not printing a test page.  Any ideas??

Hi @Deb010951,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Envy 7640 is experiencing an issue with the black ink cartridge. Here are a few troubleshooting steps to try.

Clean the Printhead

  • Sometimes, dried ink can clog the printhead, preventing black ink from printing.
  • You can clean the printhead from the printer's control panel by selecting Settings > Tools > Clean Printhead.
  • The printer will run a cleaning cycle and may print a diagnostic page afterward. You might need to run the cleaning cycle 2-3 times if the first attempt doesn’t work.

Check the Black Ink Cartridge

  • Even though the indicator shows that the black ink is half full, there could still be an issue with the cartridge itself.
  • Remove the black ink cartridge, inspect it for damage, and clean the electrical contacts with a lint-free cloth. This ensures proper communication between the cartridge and the printer.

Run a Printer Diagnostic Report

  • On your printer, go to Settings > Reports > Print Quality Report.
  • Check this report to see if the black ink shows up. If black ink is still missing, it’s likely that the black ink cartridge is malfunctioning or clogged.

Use the Printer Software Utility

  • If you have HP software installed on your computer, you can use the utility to run a cleaning cycle or troubleshoot further.
  • Open the HP Smart app, go to Printer Settings, and run maintenance tasks like cleaning the printhead or aligning the cartridges.

Replace the Black Ink Cartridge

  • If cleaning and troubleshooting don’t resolve the issue, the black ink cartridge may be faulty. Try replacing the black ink cartridge with a new one to see if that resolves the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
