Hello,

I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 9013 All-in-One Printer that is currently set up for the Middle East/Egypt ink region and uses HP 963 ink cartridges. I would like to reset the printer's region to Canada/North America so that it can use HP 962 ink cartridges instead.

My questions are:

  1. Does the printer being out of warranty affect whether HP Support can perform a regionalization reset from HP 963 to HP 962 cartridges, or is the reset still possible?
  2. The HP 963 cartridges currently installed are the original cartridges that came with the printer and may also be out of warranty. They are recognized by the printer, but the colour cartridges are depleted. Would that be a problem for the reset process?
  3. If I purchase HP 962 or HP 962XL cartridges that are still in warranty, would those be sufficient for the reset?

Could an HP representative please confirm whether this reset can be done and what the exact requirements and steps are?

Thank you.

Hi @magaahabi,

Thank you for your questions.

1. HP 962/962XL Cartridge Warranty Status

For the regionalization process, the most important requirement is that the cartridges are genuine HP cartridges for the target region (Canada/North America in your case) and that they are recognized as valid cartridges for that region.

In general, HP prefers that the cartridges be genuine and unopened. We do not typically verify the cartridge warranty status as part of the regionalization procedure itself. However, because regionalization requirements can vary depending on the printer model and the reset process being used, we cannot guarantee that an out-of-warranty cartridge will be accepted until the regionalization is attempted.

If possible, using genuine HP 962 or 962XL cartridges that are still within their warranty period is the safest option. If you already have genuine, sealed HP 962XL cartridges, they may still work for the process, but final validation occurs when the printer attempts to recognize them.

2. HP App on macOS

Yes, when I referred to the HP App, I was referring to the newer HP application that has replaced HP Smart on supported platforms.

On macOS, this is the "HP app. If you already have that installed, that is the application we would recommend using rather than HP Smart.

Before proceeding with the regionalization, please ensure that:

  • The original HP 963 cartridges remain installed and recognized by the printer.
  • You have the replacement HP 962/962XL cartridges available for the target region.
  • The printer is connected to your Mac.
  • A USB cable is available if requested during the process.

Based on the information you've provided so far, having the recognized HP 963 cartridges installed, even if some colors are depleted, should allow the regionalization request to be evaluated. Once the regionalization code is generated and applied, the HP 962/962XL cartridges for the Canada/North America region will then be installed.

Hi @magaahabi,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for laying out your questions clearly. Regional reset (also called regionalization unlock) is something HP Support can assist with under the right conditions. I’ll address each of your questions directly.

Does being out of warranty affect the regional reset?

👉 No, the printer being out of warranty does NOT prevent a regional reset.

  • Regionalization is handled as a configuration change, not a hardware repair
  • HP Support can still perform the reset as long as the eligibility conditions are met

I request you to please get back to me with the following information, so that I can help you change the region settings on the printer.

Do you still have the ink cartridges for both regions

Do you have a printer USB cable?

Which OS is on the PC? Is it Windows or Mac?

Do you have the printer's full-feature software and drivers installed on your PC?

Hope this helps!

Hi VikramTheGreat,

Thank you for confirming that the printer being out of warranty does not prevent a regional reset.

Here are the details:

  1. I still have the original HP 963 cartridges for the current region installed in the printer. They came with the printer and may also be out of warranty. They are recognized by the printer, but the colour cartridges are depleted. Please confirm whether depleted but recognized HP 963 cartridges are sufficient for the reset process.
  2. I do not yet have the HP 962 cartridges for the Canada/North America region, but I can purchase genuine HP 962 or HP 962XL cartridges that are still in warranty before proceeding. Please confirm whether that would meet the requirement for cartridges from both regions.
  3. I have a printer USB cable.
  4. My computer is a Mac running macOS 26.0 Tahoe.
  5. I currently have the HP app installed on my mac. Please let me know if I need any other software for the reset.

Please let me know the next steps.

Thank you.

Hi @magaahabi,

Based on the information you've shared, the regionalization reset process should still be possible even if the printer is out of warranty.

Regarding the cartridges:

  • If the currently installed HP 963 cartridges are still recognized by the printer, we can generally attempt the regionalization process even if some of the cartridges are low on ink or depleted. The important factor is that the printer can detect and identify the cartridges from the current region.
  • You will also need to have genuine HP 962 or HP 962XL cartridges available for the Canada/North America region. Once the regionalization reset code is generated and the process is performed, the printer will need to be initialized with cartridges from the new region.
  • Therefore, it is important to have cartridges from both regions available during the regionalization process:
    • The currently recognized HP 963 cartridges (current region).
    • The new HP 962/962XL cartridges (target region).

Your Mac running macOS Tahoe and the HP app should be sufficient for the process in most cases. If additional software or specific steps are required during the regionalization procedure, those instructions will be provided at the time the reset is performed.

Before proceeding, connect the printer via USB (usually you need it in case your internet connection is not strong or may have downtime while performing it. You can skip it and perform the process under wifi as well)

Launch HP App and click the product ink levels to open the Supported Cartridges window.

Clicking ink levels in HP App

Hold down the CTRL and SHIFT keys (Cmd + Space in MAC) and then right-click on the empty area to the right of the ink levels.

Clicking to the right of the ink levels

The Set New Regions window opens.

Please share a screenshot of this window here on Private message.

Hi VikramTheGreat,

Thank you for the instructions. I have a few clarifying questions before I proceed:

  1. For the target Canada/North America region, do the HP 962 or HP 962XL cartridges need to still be within their warranty period, or can genuine, sealed, out-of-warranty HP 962XL cartridges also be used for the regionalization reset?
  2. When you say “HP App,” do you mean the new "HP: Print and Support" app for macOS, formerly HP Smart?

Thank you.
