I have long been struggling with poor print quality on HP SmartTank 515 - probably a result of a misaligned printhead, however I couldn't ever complete alignment. After the scan and some printing,I just get an error message that tells me to try again. And I have been trying again for months. Sometimes cleaning printheads worked almost to a point where I could print out a page of text and nearly all text was visible with no gaps. but lately black printhead just doesn't seem to bother anymore, its just "gone" most of the time, no black ink comes out. there is ink in the tank. and the printer itself doesn't recognize this as an issue,so I can't even reach the printhead as it wouldn't come to the spot where one could remove and examine it.

Hi @Kit2001,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're dealing with a frustrating issue with your HP SmartTank 515.
Here are some steps you can try to resolve the alignment and printhead issues:
1. Check the Printhead and Ink Cartridges
Remove and Reinstall the Printhead:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the access door to the printhead.
- Carefully remove the printhead. Inspect it for any visible issues or clogs.
- Reinstall the printhead, making sure it's securely in place.
Check Ink Levels:
- Ensure that the black ink tank has enough ink. Sometimes, even if it seems full, air bubbles or clogs can cause problems.
2. Clean the Printhead
- Manual Cleaning:
- Turn off and unplug the printer.
- Carefully remove the printhead.
- Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water or rubbing alcohol and gently clean the printhead nozzles and contacts.
- Allow the printhead to dry completely before reinstalling it.
3. Perform a Printhead Alignment
Automatic Alignment:
- Go to the printer settings on your computer.
- Navigate to the printhead alignment option and follow the prompts. If the printer can’t complete the alignment, try it several times.
Manual Alignment:
- If the automatic alignment fails, consult the printer’s manual for instructions on manual alignment. This often involves scanning an alignment page.
4. Update Printer Firmware and Drivers Update the firmware on an HP printer
Update Firmware:
- Visit the HP website and check if there is a firmware update available for your printer model. Follow the instructions to update.
Update Drivers:
- Ensure you have the latest printer drivers installed. You can download them from the HP website or use the HP Smart app to check for updates.
5. Check for Paper Jams and Obstructions HP Smart Tank 500, 550 printers - 'E4' error (Paper Jam)
- Inspect for Paper Jams:
- Make sure there are no paper jams or obstructions inside the printer that could be affecting the printhead movement.
6. Factory Reset
- Perform a Factory Reset:
- If none of the above solutions work, you might need to perform a factory reset. This will erase all settings and return the printer to its original state. Consult the printer’s manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.
