Hi, My HP LaserJet Pro 8020 has simply stopped printing, except for a color bar here and there. I have replaced the ink with HP cartridges, unplugged, looked for new drivers. What next?

Hi @CaseyBoo

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that your HP LaserJet Pro MFP 8020 series has stopped printing and only prints a color bar or partial marks, the issue could be related to the printhead, firmware, driver, or a hardware component. Please follow the steps below in order I would request you to please follow the steps:

Print an Internal Quality Report

Printing an internal report helps determine whether the issue is with the printer hardware or the computer.

  • On the printer control panel, tap Setup (Gear icon).
  • Go to Reports.
  • Select Print Quality Report or Printer Status Report.
  • Review the report:
  • If the report also prints only color bars or is missing text/images, continue with the steps below.
  • If the report prints normally, the issue is likely related to the driver or application.

Clean the Printheads

  • From the printer control panel, open Setup.
  • Navigate to Printer Maintenance or Tools.
  • Select Clean Printhead.
  • If the first cleaning does not resolve the issue, perform a second cleaning cycle.
  • Avoid running more than two or three cleaning cycles consecutively, as this uses a significant amount of ink.

Align the Printhead

  • Open Setup > Printer Maintenance.
  • Select Align Printhead.
  • Allow the alignment process to complete.

Update the Printer Firmware

  • Open the HP App or visit the HP Support website. https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers
  • Check for and install any available firmware updates for your printer.
  • Restart the printer after the update.

Reinstall the Printer Driver

  • Remove the printer from Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Download and install the latest Full Feature Software or driver package for your printer from HP Support.
  • Add the printer again and try printing.

Perform a Power Reset

  • Turn the printer on.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors if possible).
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer and turn it on.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
