I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 series. My magenta ink cartridge ran out and I replaced it with a new cartidge from HP Instant Ink. Now it is saying I have a supply system problem. I tried another new cartridge I had from instant ink as well as all the virtual assistant solutions and nothing has worked. Is there anything else I can do? Or do I just need to buy a new printer?

Hi @SkillBuilder,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand how frustrating this is, you’ve replaced the magenta cartridge in your HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 series with an official Instant Ink cartridge, but you’re still seeing a “Supply System Problem” message.
Let’s go step by step to try to rule out common causes before deciding if the printer needs service.

1. Basic Checks

Power Reset

Turn the printer on.

While it is powered on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and from the wall.

Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (not a power strip) and turn the printer on.

Inspect the Cartridges

Remove the magenta cartridge.

Check the copper contacts and the vent area (small slot on top) for any protective tape, dried ink, or debris.

Make sure the chip is clean and not damaged.

Wipe the contacts gently with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol; let it dry.

Re-insert the cartridge firmly until it clicks in place.

Check Other Cartridges

Sometimes the error is triggered by another cartridge. Remove and reseat all cartridges one by one.

2. Firmware & Network

Make sure the printer is connected to the Internet (Instant Ink requires it).
If Wi-Fi is disconnected, reconnect via the printer’s control panel.

Check for a firmware update:

On the printer, go to Setup → Printer Maintenance → Update the Printer.

Allow any updates to install, then restart the printer.

3. Cartridge Authentication

Instant Ink cartridges work only when the printer is enrolled and online.

If the subscription has lapsed or the printer is offline, it can show “Supply System Problem.”

Sign in to your HP Instant Ink account and confirm:

The printer shows as active.

The subscription is not paused or cancelled.

I hope this helps.
