I cannot change the dpi of my printer. I have tried from the printer's tiny little screen, I've tried from the app, from my computer, and through various applications (such as Photoshop. It is obvious to me (from the image provided) that there should be many options, but I'm only given 4. I know "maximum dpi" isn't maximum. Because no matter what application I try to print from (Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, Google Docs, etc) the print quality always comes out the same. It didn't bother me before because I was always printing drafts and proof of concepts, but now I need the best quality I can get, from the printer I was told would be able to handle. So how do I force the printer into Pro Res 1200 mode?

Hi @Jean_Corssair,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The HP Officejet Pro 8210 printer generally supports a maximum print resolution of up to 2400 x 1200 dpi. However, the effective print quality might be influenced by factors such as the type of paper being used, print settings, and the content being printed.
Here are some steps you can take to try and enhance the print quality.
-
Check Paper Type: Ensure that you are using high-quality paper that is compatible with your printer. Different paper types can affect print quality.
-
Printer Properties on Computer: When you print a document, you should be able to access printer properties or settings on your computer. From there, you might be able to adjust print quality settings. In applications like Adobe Acrobat or Photoshop, look for print settings or preferences and choose the highest quality option.
-
HP Smart App: If you have the HP Smart app installed, try adjusting the print quality settings through the app. Open the app, select your printer, and look for options related to print quality.
-
Printer's Control Panel: On the printer's control panel, there should be an option to access settings. Navigate to the print quality or resolution settings. The path might vary, but typically you can find it under "Settings" or "Setup."
-
Printer Firmware Update: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Manufacturers sometimes release updates that can improve functionality, including print quality.
-
HP Print and Scan Doctor: You can download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility from the official HP website. This tool can automatically diagnose and resolve printing issues.
Keep in mind that not all printers allow users to manually set the DPI (dots per inch) directly, as this is often managed automatically based on the selected print quality settings.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

1. I've tried different paper types
2. You can see in the image I've tried changing the printer properties.
3. The "Smart" app, under "Print Quality" has no adjustable settings, only 3 different test prints. Adjusting Print Quality settings was the second place I checked (a quick google search said I could change the DPI there but the option I was told would be there isn't there).
4. The print settings on the printer itself are identical to what the "smart" app lists as test print options.
5. I've already triple-checked to make sure the printer, its drivers, and the HP software on my computer is up to date. It has made 0 changes.
6. Print and Scan Doctor claimed it found and fixed some problems - but no changes have been observed.
The right-click for options clearly indicates that I should be able to select from more than 4 options.
No, this post was not helpful.
As I've said, I want to select the "ProRes1200" option. You can tell me that I only get to choose from "general office", "Professional", "Presentation", and "Maximum DPI" - fine. If they worked. Each of those four options makes no difference. At all. Every colour comes out muted, details are lost. Especially in blues, the subtle differences in hues are not being printed.
600 or 1200 dpi selected in other apps, telling photoshop to override with its quality settings, none of it makes any difference. As you've already indicated, my printer should be able to print up to 2400 x 1200 dpi. After checking to make sure firmware is up-to-date, this means the problem is with the HP software controlling the printer - something is limiting the quality of my prints. And since the first thing I find that's wrong is that I only have 4 options for print quality (when there should be at least 10) that is my prime suspect for this issue.
So how do I access these extra settings? Why is my "Print Quality Toolbox" only giving me 3 different test prints and not actually showing any tools for Print Quality?

Jean,
I don't know if this will be helpful or not. I purchased an HP 8210 about a week ago and am struggling to get it to print in high resolution consistently. Here's what I've learned by trial and error so far.
To get the best resolution possible on this printer, the Print Quality must be set to Max DPI in both the Printer Preferences and in the Adobe file you want to print. I was attempting to print an older Adobe InDesign file that had been set to Professional and got low resolution print outs until I switched the print quality in the InDesign file to Max DPI. Once Max DPI was chosen in both locations (printer and file), I was able to print in high resolution. Unfortunately, it was short-lived. When I reopened the file that had printed great a few days earlier, it was back to printing in low res even though the file's print quality was still set to Max DPI. Choosing a different print quality and then choosing Max DPI again improved the print quality but not to what it had been a few days before. There were a few blurry lines of type. I realize that resetting the resolution every time the file is opened is not really a solution, but maybe it will help lead you to one. Perhaps the only solution is to return the 8210 and buy a different printer with a higher resolution, which I am considering doing. I wish the HP 8100 printer was still available. That printer printed high resolution on a consistent basis, but the model is no longer available.
I hope you find a solution to your resolution issues!

Hey, Irwin
If you read my previous posts/comment, it's obvious I've already done all of that.
The only issue I can tbink of now, is that HP has software that specifically limits what my printer will do unless I buy HP's specific paper.
So, fuqq HP. Cancelling my Insta Ink subscription. And either going to jailbreak the printer to force it to print correctly, or scrapping it and buying a printer from a different company.
And making sure I tell everyone I know that HP is garbage & not only prevents you from using their printers (if you've registered it for Instaink) unless you're enrolled in instaink (some of my friends know this already), but also that the quality of prints are locked behind even more paid "services".
HP support can't tell me that their company is purposely limiting their machines. I get it. It's not your fault, Irwin.
