Why so MANY different printer cartridges?

HP Recommended
Deskjet 3637
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

There must be a dozen different HP cartridges.

The reason I am asking is that my existing printer, which is NOT printing uses a  #63 black. I was thinking of buying a new #63 cartridge and if the printer still does not work, I will have to buy a new printer but the one I see uses a #67 cartridge, so I will have wasted my money. WHY aren't there STANDARD cartridges across similar printers???

Because HP and other manufacturers are making money on selling consumables ( ink cartridges and toner cartridges) they don't make money on selling printers.

I understand that BUT IF they were compatible, I would "gamble" that a new cartridge would solve my problem, and if not I would buy a new HP printer and have the otherwise useless cartridge as a backup. INSTEAD I will junk  my useless printer and buy a different brand
