hello,

why does a black line appear when i make a copy or scan a document?  i can't get rid of it.

Does the line only happen if you use the document feeder rather than the flatbed scanner?  If so there is likely a small spot on the thin (about 1" wide) glass strip to the left of the main scanner bed.  Clean this area very well with glass cleaner sprayed on a lint-free cloth.  Spray the glass cleaner directly on the cloth, do not spray the glass.

OK, for stubborn cases the following may help:  get a blank sheet and write "top" at the top of the page.  Set the copier to make a single sided copy (1:1).  Feed the sheet with "top" facing up and first into the feeder.  Click to make a black copy.  When the copy finishes remove the copy and place the part marked "top" face-up on the flatbed scanner, with the "top" toward the thin glass strip.  The debris on the thin glass will be pointed to by the line on the copy.  It may help to shine a flashlight from the front of the Officejet parallel to the glass strip to highlight the area that needs to be cleaned.

Using the line as a pointer for the place to clean give a good cleaning to the area.  It only takes a tiny spec on the thin glass to leave a line when feeding with the document feeder.
