Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Getting a "cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in instant ink" alarm. I bought the printer 2nd hand. The original owner was enrolled but his account was suspended. I removed his cartridges and replaced them with new HP cartridges but alarm didn't go away. I tried a cold reset to reset to factory defaults. Didn't work. I can't contact Instant ink because the first thing they do is ask for my account number. Since I don't have one I can't get through

HI @Kcaj99,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

You are receiving this message “Cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink” on your printer, there must be an issue with the account. HP Instant Ink cartridges ONLY work if you are currently enrolled in the HP Instant Ink service.

To solve the issue please remove all HP Instant Ink cartridges from the printer.

There are three types of cartridges:

  • Label does not say “Instant Ink” or “Instant Ink Ready” – these can be used in any compatible printer.
  • Label says “Instant Ink” – these can only be used in a printer that is currently enrolled in Instant Ink.
  • Label says “Instant Ink Ready”:
    • If these have ever been used in an enrolled printer, then they can only be used in an enrolled printer.
    • If these have never been used in an enrolled printer, then they can be used in any compatible printer.

As you mentioned the account was suspended, I request you to contact the owner and ask them to make the final bill payment, That might be blocking the printer. Could you please check with them if they have made the final settlement and canceled the enrollment?

In the meantime,  You may try the steps below:

At first, Let's do a network reset:

1. Disconnect the power cord from the router.

2. Turn off the printer.

3. Turn off the mobile device/PC.

Press and hold the wireless ((i)) and cancel button at the same time for 5 seconds.

4. Reconnect the power cord to the router, then wait for the Internet activity light to display a normal connected status.

5. Turn on the printer.

6. Turn on the mobile device/PC.

Once done please disable the web services: Click Here

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
