@Amk53, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems that your HP printer's cartridges are stuck on the right side, and despite having just installed new cartridges, it still indicates that one is out of ink. This typically suggests one of the following issues:

  • The printer isn't recognizing the cartridge correctly,
  • There may be a carriage jam, or
  • There could be a sensor malfunction within the printer.

Here’s how to resolve the problem:

Power Off and Unplug the Printer

  • Completely turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the wall for about 2-3 minutes to reset its internal sensors.

Manually Move the Cartridge Carriage

  • Open the access door of the printer where the cartridges are installed.
  • Gently shift the cartridge carriage to the center by hand (avoid forcing it if it’s stuck).
  • If it’s completely jammed, check for any bits of torn paper or plastic that might be blocking it — use a flashlight for a thorough inspection.

Remove and Reinsert Cartridges

  • Carefully take out both cartridges.
  • Inspect the cartridges:
    • Ensure there’s no plastic tape still covering the copper contacts or ink nozzles.
    • If there is, remove the protective tape (it can be small and easily overlooked).
  • Clean the copper contacts of the cartridges and the printer’s contacts gently with a soft, lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Then, reinsert the cartridges securely.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • Sometimes, printers require a firmware update to properly recognize newly installed cartridges.
  • If you can power it back on, check the printer settings or the HP Smart app for any available updates.

Perform a Semi-Full Reset

If the issue persists:

  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • While holding it, plug the power cord back in.
  • Release the button after 15 seconds.
  • This action forces the printer to attempt a hard reset, which often resolves carriage jams and ink detection issues.

If the problem continues after trying all these steps, it may indicate a hardware issue

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
