Hi @kathydleo,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error code 0xC19a0003 (Printhead Failure) on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer usually indicates a hardware issue with the printhead or its connection to the printer. Here's a step-by-step guide to resolve the issue.
Restart the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for at least 5 minutes.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
Check and Clean the Printhead
- Remove the Ink Cartridges:
- Open the printer's access door.
- Wait for the carriage to move to the center, then remove the cartridges.
- Clean the Printhead Contacts:
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
- Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the printhead.
- Clean the Cartridge Contacts:
- Similarly, clean the contacts on the cartridges.
- Let the contacts dry for 5-10 minutes.
- Reinsert the cartridges and close the access door.
Update Printer Firmware
Sometimes, updating the printer firmware resolves hardware communication issues:
- Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads.
- Search for your printer model and download the latest firmware.
- Install the firmware update by following the on-screen instructions.
Perform a Semi-Full Reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power outlet.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Press and hold the # and 9 buttons on the printer's control panel.
- While holding the buttons, plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Release the buttons when the printer powers up.
Note: This reset may erase some settings, so you might need to reconfigure WiFi and preferences.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
