Hi @kathydleo,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error code 0xC19a0003 (Printhead Failure) on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer usually indicates a hardware issue with the printhead or its connection to the printer. Here's a step-by-step guide to resolve the issue.

Restart the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait for at least 5 minutes.
  3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Check and Clean the Printhead

  1. Remove the Ink Cartridges:
    • Open the printer's access door.
    • Wait for the carriage to move to the center, then remove the cartridges.
  2. Clean the Printhead Contacts:
    • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
    • Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the printhead.
  3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts:
    • Similarly, clean the contacts on the cartridges.
  4. Let the contacts dry for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Reinsert the cartridges and close the access door.

Update Printer Firmware

Sometimes, updating the printer firmware resolves hardware communication issues:

  1. Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  2. Search for your printer model and download the latest firmware.
  3. Install the firmware update by following the on-screen instructions.

Perform a Semi-Full Reset

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power outlet.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Press and hold the # and 9 buttons on the printer's control panel.
  4. While holding the buttons, plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  5. Release the buttons when the printer powers up.

Note: This reset may erase some settings, so you might need to reconfigure WiFi and preferences.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
