Hi @iiiza

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry you're running into this issue—it’s understandably frustrating, especially after replacing the cartridge and following all the right steps. Let’s go through what you can do to get your HP DeskJet 4200e series to recognize your new black ink cartridge properly.

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Confirm Cartridge Compatibility

  • Make sure you're using HP 67 or HP 305 cartridges (depending on your region).
  • They must be genuine HP cartridges—third-party or refilled ones often fail to register.

2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

Even new cartridges can have residue or misaligned chips:

  • Power off the printer
  • Remove the black cartridge
  • Use a dry, lint-free cloth to gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks

Avoid using alcohol or liquids—just a dry cloth is best.

3. Perform a Power Drain Reset

This clears residual memory and resets the cartridge logic:

  1. Remove both cartridges
  2. Unplug the printer from the wall (not just the surge protector)
  3. Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds
  4. Wait 30 seconds
  5. Plug the printer back in and power it on
  6. Reinsert the cartridges

4. Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause cartridge recognition issues:

5. Factory Reset the Printer

If all else fails:

  • On the printer control panel, go to Settings → Printer Maintenance → Restore Defaults
  • Confirm and allow the printer to restart

This clears any persistent cartridge lock or memory glitch.

You’ve done everything right—let’s make sure your printer does too.
