Hi @Dennis270,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating this is, especially after replacing the cartridge and expecting everything to work smoothly. When your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 still shows the yellow cartridge as empty and refuses to print even in black, it usually points to one of these issues:

Step 1: Check Cartridge Authenticity and Seating

  • Make sure the yellow cartridge is genuine HP and compatible with your printer (HP 952/952XL series).
  • Open the cartridge access door and remove the yellow cartridge.
  • Inspect for:
    • Protective tape is still on the ink nozzle (sometimes overlooked).
    • Any debris or ink buildup on the electrical contacts.
  • Wipe contacts gently with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks.

Step 2: Reset the Printer

  • With the printer ON, unplug the power cord from the back and the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Power on the printer and check the status.

Step 3: Update Firmware

Step 4: Override Color Ink Requirement

Unfortunately, most HP OfficeJet Pro printers require all cartridges to have ink to print, even black-only jobs. If the yellow cartridge is not recognized, the printer will block printing.
To fix this:

  • Replace the yellow cartridge with another genuine HP cartridge if available.
  • If the issue persists, the cartridge or the printhead may be faulty.

Step 5: Clean Printhead

  • On the printer control panel:
Setup → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead.
  • Run the cleaning cycle and check if the error clears.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
