Hi @MadDogMark ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I'd like to help!

You may refill your cartridges or use remanufactured cartridges, but you may run into problems. HP will not guarantee the functionality of those ink cartridges.

There are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it's not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.

Is the M280_M281 firmware driver compatible with M283?
Is it safe to use the M281 20200612 driver to fix this error as it is with M281?

I'm well aware of the evils of using refilled/clone cartridges.
That wasn't the problem.
Actually I don't know what made it start working again.
I did try to install the old M281 firmware, which was rejected.
It started working after that however.
I've used "non-genuine" cartridges since the starter cartridges ran out.
When replacing the cartridges costs more than the printer, that's a problem.
I regret not researching the replacement cartridge cost before making the printer purchase.

The M281 driver is rejected by the M283 printer.
