I bought an HP8210 2 years ago for home use. About a year ago I bought a new HP ink package (B,C,R,Y). The C ran out last week and when I put it in it says "older generation ink". How can this be? I bought the ink AFTER I bought the printer.

why doesn't this work? And what is HP going to do to fix it?

Welcome to HP Support Community, @kheight

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8210 shows a cartridge compatibility error, the issue is usually related to cartridge generation, cartridge age, or firmware.

1. Cartridge Generation Mismatch

HP cartridges are manufactured in different generations. When the printer receives a firmware update, it may stop accepting older-generation cartridges. This means a new-looking cartridge may still be from an older batch that your updated printer no longer supports.

Solution: Verify whether the cartridge belongs to an older generation and check if the printer was recently updated.

2. Old or Expired Cartridge

Ink cartridges have an "Install By" date. If the cartridge is old stock or expired, the printer may refuse to use it.

Solution: Check the "Install By" date printed on the cartridge or box. Avoid using very old or expired cartridges.

3. Firmware Compatibility

Firmware updates sometimes change which cartridge generations are supported.

Solution: Visit the HP Support website, search for OfficeJet Pro 8210, and install the latest firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
