I purchased a 2nd printer for the holiday home, Is there any way to extend the life of the ink cartridge HP304, because of lack of use the quality of the print is so bad I have to replace a 3/4 full cartridge when I need tp print off paper work. I've done all the clean printer heads, test sheets but it's just not good enough.

Are you leaving the printer on in sleep mode or powering off completely? These devices are designed to start up periodically and perform a maintenance cycle to avoid this but if you are turning off the printer it obviously is not able to do this. For low volume, occasional use I typically recommend a small color laser, yes they cost more per page but you do not have the same drying out issues as inkjet.
