Do I have to replace all the ink cartridges when one gets low or can i just replace the one that's low?

Hi eliteresearch22

For most HP printers, you only need to replace the specific cartridge that is low or empty. You do not need to replace the entire set at once.

However, there are a few technical nuances depending on your specific model and how you use the printer:

1. Individual vs. Tri-color Cartridges

  • Individual Cartridges: If your printer uses four separate slots (Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow), you simply swap out the one that is empty. The printer will typically refuse to print once a color is completely depleted to prevent damage to the printhead.

  • Tri-color Cartridges: If your printer uses one Black cartridge and one "Tri-color" cartridge (which contains Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow in a single unit), you must replace the entire Tri-color unit even if only one of those three colors has run out.

2. Printing in "Greyscale"

If you run out of a color cartridge but still have plenty of black ink, you can often continue printing for a short time by adjusting your print settings:

  • Go to Printer Properties or Preferences.

  • Look for Color Options or Features.

  • Select Print in Greyscale and choose the Black Ink Only setting.

  • Note: Many modern printers still require a minimum amount of color ink to be present in all cartridges to perform routine maintenance and prevent the nozzles from clogging.

3. HP Instant Ink

If you are enrolled in the Instant Ink subscription service, the process is even more automated. The printer communicates its ink levels to HP, and they ship you the specific individual cartridge that is running low before it actually runs out. You only swap them as they arrive.

Pro Tip: If you notice a "Low Ink" warning but the print quality is still good, you can usually keep printing until the quality visibly degrades or the printer forces a stop. This ensures you get the maximum value out of every drop!

I hope the above is helpful
