HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf Multifunction Printer

I had been printing and got a install black cartridge. (toner out). I have now tried three new cartridges and still get the same message. I have unplugged the printer and restarted it with the same problem.

Not relevant but in case you need info - Mac Air 14.7.1 (23H222).

Hi @Mishy2025,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand how frustrating it can be when your printer doesn't recognize new cartridges, especially after trying multiple replacements. Let’s work together to resolve this issue.

  • Have you verified that the new toner cartridges are compatible with your HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf printer?
  • Are you getting any error codes or messages on the printer display, aside from the "install black cartridge" message?
  • Have you tried installing the new toner cartridges on another printer (if available) to see if they are functioning properly?

This could be a compatible issue with your current OS.

However, let's try these steps.

Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Make sure that the toner cartridge is properly installed in the correct slot. Sometimes, the cartridge may not be seated properly, causing the printer to fail to recognize it. Gently remove and reinsert the cartridge to ensure it's securely in place.

Clean the Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Open the toner compartment and gently clean the metal contacts inside the printer and on the toner cartridge using a lint-free cloth. Dust or toner residue can sometimes cause the printer to fail to recognize the cartridge.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a hard reset by turning off the printer, unplugging it from the power outlet, and waiting for about 60 seconds. Then, plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes help the printer reset and recognize new toner cartridges.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes, an outdated firmware version may cause compatibility issues with toner cartridges. Check the HP website or use the HP Smart app for any available updates.

Try a Different Cartridge:

  • Even though the new cartridges may be from the same brand and model, there can occasionally be a faulty batch. If possible, try using a different new cartridge or purchase one directly from an authorized retailer to ensure it's not a defective toner.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
