Hi @Collegeboy ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP ENVY 5020 All-in-One Printer is showing an error indicating that the ink cartridges are not communicating with the printer, despite replacing them with new ones, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:
1. Check Cartridge Compatibility
- Ensure the new cartridges you installed are compatible with the HP ENVY 5020. The correct cartridges should be HP 304 or HP 304XL.
2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Power off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the printer to access the cartridges.
- Remove the cartridges, and gently clean the copper contacts (small gold dots on the cartridges) with a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water or alcohol.
- Let the contacts dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.
3. Reset the Printer
- Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer while it is turned on.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet and wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall and reconnect it to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and check if the error is resolved.
4. Reinstall the Cartridges
- Turn off the printer, remove the cartridges, and then reinsert them carefully to ensure they are seated correctly.
- Make sure to close the cartridge access door completely before turning the printer back on.
5. Check for Firmware Updates Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for updates via the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP Support website.
6. Inspect the Printhead
- If the issue persists, the printhead might be at fault. You can try cleaning the printhead using the printer’s built-in cleaning feature from the control panel or HP Smart app. HP printer setup (HP Smart app)
