im using hp deskjet 2722, and it was doing fine the other day. the ink catridges were just rip offs from the original catridges because the shop owner of this one printer shop i went to said they dont make ink catridges for this model anymore unless if i pre order first and it costs alot of money. so now the issue here is that i just started using my printer in middle of october 2025 till last week and it was doing fine, the little screen on the printer shows the amount of ink left in the catridge. last time i checked its half for bot black and color inks. but then all of a sudden it blinks orange light and both the ink catridges are empty based on that little screen on the printer. i dont think its because the ink is out, because last time i checked its half on both inks. i tried turning the printer on and off but still to no avail. i do not know what is wrong with my printer.

Hi @aisya-joe03_

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating this must feel, especially since the printer was working fine just a short while ago and you’ve already tried powering it off and on. Thank you for sharing the details of what you’ve observed—it really helps narrow down the possibilities.

Let’s walk through some steps together to bring the printer back to life:

Troubleshooting Steps for HP DeskJet 2722 Cartridge Detection

Check Cartridge Contacts

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove both cartridges.
  • Using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water, gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and the matching contacts inside the carriage.
  • Allow them to dry completely before reinserting.

Reinstall Cartridges

  • Insert the black cartridge into the right slot and the color cartridge into the left slot.
  • Push them firmly until they click into place.

Reset the Printer

  • With the printer powered on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the cord back in and power on the printer. This clears temporary memory and resets the ink system.

Run a Diagnostic from the HP App

  • On your Windows PC, open the HP App.
  • Select your printer, go to Printer Settings, and choose Diagnose & Fix.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to check for cartridge recognition issues.

Update Firmware

Check Cartridge Compatibility

  • The DeskJet 2722 is designed for HP 305 or HP 305XL cartridges (depending on region).
  • Non-original or refilled cartridges may work temporarily but can fail to be detected reliably. If possible, try with genuine cartridges to confirm whether the issue is with the printer or the cartridges.

If after cleaning, resetting, and updating firmware the cartridges are still not detected, the problem is likely due to the non-original cartridges. The printer’s ink monitoring system may no longer recognize them even if they physically contain ink.
