The printer refuses to acknowledge new 902 ink cartridge. I've tried unplugging the printer from the wall, turning on & off the printer, & installing removing & reinstalling the cartridge but still get the message one or more cartridges are missing or damaged. These are new cartridges out of the box, both 902 & 902xl get the same messager

There is a possibility the ink is not genuine. I am just guessing, but these thing do happen..
To check if an HP ink cartridge is genuine, look for a security label on the cartridge, scan the QR code on the label with your phone, and then go to HP's website hp.com/go/ok to verify the serial number on the label; if the label appears tampered or the serial number doesn't validate, the cartridge is likely not genuine.
Non HP ink can be used on this list of HP printers.
