My printer is always in error because there is something wrong with the color cartridge.
I only need to make prints in black.
Is there a possibility to let the printer work with only the black cartridge ?
How can I change the setup for that ?

@guidoca, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Using the HP Photosmart C4180 Printer with Only the Black Cartridge!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Unfortunately, most HP printers, including the HP Photosmart C4180, require both the black and the color cartridge to be installed for the printer to function correctly. The printer will usually display an error if one of the cartridges is missing or not working properly.
However, there is a workaround that allows you to print using only the black cartridge even if the color cartridge is not fully functional. This method involves configuring the printer settings to use grayscale printing:
Steps to Print in Grayscale (Black and White Only):
Install Both Cartridges:
- Ensure both the black and the color cartridges are installed in the printer, even if the color cartridge is empty or faulty.
Printer Software Settings:
- Open the document or image you want to print.
- Open the print dialog box (usually by clicking on File > Print or pressing Ctrl + P).
- Select your HP Photosmart C4180 printer.
Printer Properties:
- Click on Properties, Options, or Printer Preferences (the name might vary depending on your operating system).
- In the print settings dialog, find the option for Print in Grayscale or Black & White. This is often found under the Advanced options or within a tab named Color or Quality.
Confirm and Print:
- Select the option to print in grayscale or black and white.
- Confirm the settings and proceed to print your document.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!
