Hello Gaya1239 model is Office Jet Pro7740 [6 months old] may be easier if I explain if I box border and item in A3 the length of the A3 the line breaks/jumps in 4-5 places. when is is printing is does not print 'smooth' its like whoosh whoosh whoosh or print print print like its in sections, if that makes sense. If I print A4 it prints smooth and glides out. All my printing is in black no colours. Dave

Hi @Davede66,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is experiencing print alignment or hardware issues when printing in A3 format, leading to inconsistent or "jumping" text/line output.
Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure that your printer firmware is up-to-date. Firmware updates can resolve issues with print quality and hardware communication.
- You can download the latest firmware from the HP Support website or update it directly via the printer's control panel if it's connected to Wi-Fi.
2. Check Print Settings
- Make sure the print settings on your Mac are correctly configured for A3 paper.
- Go to File > Print and check the following:
- Paper Size: Set to A3 (297 x 420 mm).
- Print Quality: Try changing the print quality to Best to see if it affects the smoothness.
- Go to File > Print and check the following:
- You can also try switching between Text and Graphics or Draft mode to see if it improves print flow.
3. Perform a Printhead Alignment and Cleaning
- Printhead alignment can help fix alignment and print quality issues. Here's how:
- From the printer's touchscreen, go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Align Printhead.
- Run a Printhead Cleaning to ensure there’s no blockage or ink drying that could be causing the "whoosh" or sectional printing.
- Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
4. Check for Hardware or Paper Feed Issues
- Since the issue occurs only with A3 paper, there could be a problem with how the printer handles larger paper formats.
- Ensure that the A3 paper is properly loaded into the tray and not misaligned.
- Check for any obstructions in the paper feed mechanism that could be causing the print to start and stop in sections.
5. Reset the Printer
- Perform a factory reset of the printer in case the issue is due to a software glitch. Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
6. Reinstall Printer Driver
- Reinstall the printer driver on your Mac, especially if the issue seems to be software-related:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, remove the printer, and then add it back.
- Ensure you're using the correct driver for macOS 12.0 Monterey. You can download the driver from the HP Support website.
7. Use HP Smart App
- If you haven't already, try printing via the HP Smart App. This might provide better control over print settings and quality.
Refer to this document: HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer series User manual

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
