I have been using generic cartridges in my HP4520  but now I am getting a "not compatible" message. I was told HP sent a command without my consent to do this. How can I remove command?

Hi @spurwd,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet 4520 is suddenly showing a "Not Compatible" message for cartridges that previously worked, it is likely due to a firmware update that enabled HP's Dynamic Security feature.

1. Try Resetting the Printer

  • Turn OFF your printer.
  • Unplug it from the power source and wait for 5 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and turn it ON.
  • Check if the error persists.

2. Reinsert the Cartridges

  • Remove all cartridges from the printer.
  • Clean the cartridge contacts with a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert them one by one and check if the message disappears.

3. Check for a Firmware Downgrade Option

  • Go to HP’s firmware download page: HP Software & Drivers
  • Search for your printer model: HP OfficeJet 4520.
  • If available, download an older firmware version (before the update that blocked third-party cartridges).
  • Run the firmware installer and follow the on-screen steps.
  • Restart your printer and check if the error is resolved.

4. Disable Automatic Firmware Updates

If you manage to get the cartridges working again, prevent future issues:

  • Open HP Printer Assistant on your computer.
  • Go to Printer Updates > Manage Updates.
  • Select "Do not check for updates" or "Ask before updating". Click Apply.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
