Hi. My printer is saying I can't use continuous ink - I am not. I purchased a new HP Black ink cartridge, installed and this is the message I am getting. My color cartridges are empty but that has not been an issue in the past.

Hi @dannyk526,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems that your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is mistakenly identifying your new HP black ink cartridge as a continuous ink system, which it does not support. Since you're not using continuous ink, the issue could stem from a few potential causes.
Firmware/Software Issue
- HP printers often have firmware updates that prevent the use of third-party cartridges or even certain HP cartridges. Your printer might need an update, or the current firmware might be blocking the cartridge.
Solution:
- Update the firmware of your printer via the HP website.
- If the printer is already updated, you can try to reset the firmware:
- Unplug the printer while it’s on, then wait for 60 seconds before plugging it back in.
- Turn it back on and check if the error persists.
Cartridge Compatibility
- Sometimes new cartridges can be faulty or not fully compatible due to minor differences in the models.
Solution:
- Reinstall the cartridge: Take out the black cartridge and reinsert it, ensuring it's seated properly.
- Use HP SureSupply to check if your cartridge is genuine and compatible: HP SureSupply.
- If the issue persists, consider trying a different new HP cartridge.
Printer Settings / Error Bypass
- Even though color cartridges are empty, some HP printers refuse to work unless all ink levels are functional.
Solution:
- Disable color printing from the printer’s settings to force it to print in black-only mode.
- Access Printer Settings > Printer Preferences > Advanced tab, and select Print in Grayscale or Black Ink Only.
Reset the Printer
- A printer reset can clear any false errors.
Solution:
- Perform a full factory reset:
- From the printer’s touchscreen, navigate to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
