Hi @bewildered63 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP DeskJet 2710e is having trouble with print quality, which can be frustrating. Here are a few steps to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:
Check Ink Levels:
- Even if you just changed the black cartridge, make sure the new cartridge is properly installed and has sufficient ink.
Print Head Cleaning:
- Use the printer’s built-in cleaning function. This can usually be found in the printer settings on your computer or via the printer’s control panel. Follow the instructions to clean the print heads.
Align Print Heads:
- After cleaning, you might also need to align the print heads. This option should also be available in the printer settings.
Check Printer Settings:
- Ensure you are using the correct print settings. Go to the print dialog in Windows, check the settings, and make sure the printer is set to print in color or grayscale as needed.
Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers:
- Make sure you have the latest drivers for your printer. You can download them from the HP website. Reinstalling the drivers can sometimes fix printing issues.
Run a Print Quality Diagnostic:
- Many printers have a diagnostic tool that can help identify issues. Check if your printer has this option in its settings.
Check for Firmware Updates: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Sometimes, updating the printer’s firmware can resolve print quality issues. Look for firmware updates on the HP website.
Test with Different Software:
- Try printing from a different application to see if the issue persists. Sometimes, the problem can be related to specific software.
Print a Test Page:
- Print a test page from the printer’s control panel or the printer properties on your computer to see if the problem is with the printer itself or the specific document.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
